Title Ideas

For our trailer we needed to think up of an effective appropriate name that people would remember once they had watched the trailer.  First of all my partner and me brainstormed a few names that we could think of to make in to a list. From this my partner and I came up with 19 possible film titles. From those possible 19 titles we chose the ones that we both liked the most.  The following task was to choose the final title; we did this by creating a small survey for the target audience to choose which they prefer.

Questionnaire
We have created this questionnaire to enable us to find the most suitable name for our teaser trailer. The genre for trailer we will create is horror; furthermore we have come up with a selection of original names to give our film teaser trailer.

Please tick the one that you think is most appropriate, and if you have any ideas of your own please write them where indicated below:
1     Dare Devil
2.    Truth or dare
3.    Dead or Alive
4.    Game Over
5.    Assessment
6.    Dead Silent
7.    Time out
8.    Disconnected
Please write any other ideas here:

Other Features

There are other features found in a trailer that may persuade people to want to see the new film being produced. These are features that we should consider to have in my Trailer.  These are some of the things that we have found: -
Other films made by the same company/ people – the audience may have seen these films and really enjoyed these films and would want to see the film that the trailer is about because of the good reputation of the company/producer.
Special well-known actors found in the film – the audience may have seen other films with that particular actor in and knows that the actor has a good reputation for the films they have been in.
The name of the film – so that the audience know what the film is called when they decide they want to see it.
The date the film is going to come out – so they don’t miss viewing the film when it comes out
The company, who produces the music etc – so the audience knows what sort of music, is going to be produced and used for the film.
Websites about the film – this is so that the audience can look at more details and information about the film if they need to.

Narrative Texts

We have looked again at the same trailers that we looked at before but see what narrative techniques they used throughout the trailer and how we could relate this to my trailer.
Below in the table are narrative texts used by the existing trailers are in one column and in the second column is how we have adapted those texts to suit our trailer.

My adapted Trailers Texts

An ordinary group of friends

Whose lives…are in danger

But this evening

There lives will change

Parents were out

But someone else was in

Your FRIENDS…are DISAPPEARING

This…is only…the START

A dare no one would never forget

A tail that no one would live to tell

friends for life...and death

Decisions we have made.

Whilst analysing the film trailers my partner and I have constructed some effective knowledge from these existing trailers, and would like to put ideas forward in our productive piece.  From this we have decided to produce a trailer in the genre of horror.
We have found that in horror trailers, they use a lot of different shots and camera movements.

We had decided due to the initial storyline to use a house that contains some tension, or eerie atmosphere.

Our first initial location idea was a manor house in a quiet village; this house is made up of three floors.  The house still contains an old styled interior, with stereotypical creaky stairs, and plenty of passageways leading in to different rooms and part of the house, the doors are very large and heavy with brass handle bars, there are also large window frames looking out on to fields and small gardens, this house is also vey dark, and dreary, creating a large amount of tension which would have been perfect for our trailer production but due to unexpected circumstances this location was not available to use.

We then had a second location idea in another small village with a some run down cottage, these were unfortunately also un available due to safety reasons and the owner had just recently sold the property.

The location we have chosen to use which is fortunately available is a large cottage, which contains long passageways, plenty of doorways and interesting room layouts. The cottage also has an eerie atmosphere to it and therefore would be perfect for the genre I am working in.

Location being used
We also have our second location were shots will also be captured, in a small woodland area, here a possible chase seen with occur, and other various shots.

Analysis Of Film Trailers of the Genre I have Chosen to Produce

I did not find this trailer particularly effective, this was because if the lack of information about the film, e.g. the film title, a rough date of its release, actors within the film. In the sequence of the trailer there were main focuses for the audience to view but they were not made obvious, small importance of information was shown but in medium shots or medium close up shots, they need to be close ups/extreme close ups to be made obvious, because of this fault I think the audience would be confused as to what the film is all about, and would not find this film mysterious or exciting and would not want to see it.

I think that this film trailer is very effective. The trailers starts off introducing the family showing that they have close loving relationships with each other. It then introduces that the family is having difficulties. A box then appears outside there door, it zooms in slightly to bring the audience in to the story and create tension, the a non-diagetic deep bang sound, and an immediate cut to a black screen with dialogue typed over the top, this creates tension and questions for the audience to think about and want to find out. The main female character opens the door and there is a non-diagetic sounds to show the shock on the actors face to who she finds at her front door, this creates more questions and anxiety for the audience, as you only see a quick flash of the persons face. More non-diagetic sounds are used, zooming in, close ups/extreme close ups, are used to show the importance of the box and what is inside it and what does it do. The shots get quicker and the music becomes louder as they unravel what the box is about to create tension. It introduces the name of the film at the end of the trailer and when it is coming out, and finally who was involved with the film ad the companies who made it.

This trailer was very affective, showing suspense right from the beginning when the main male character asks the passengers to close the windows as a stranger approaches there car asking for help. A few shots later you see a medium shot of the other cars back passenger door and the eyes and upwards if a young child this creates the question of why have they only chosen to show part of her face. The fade transition used and the non-diagetic slow pace thumping noises create tension for the viewer, and why should the people feel threatened by this stranger. The young girl then sits up and shows her whole face, the young girl is seen wearing a face mask, passengers notice this and begin to panic, the audience would be curious from this as to why she is wearing this mask, panic is shown in this scene by the pace of shots getting quicker, and the music getting louder. The voice over narrative speech informs the audience of the story line behind the film, and there are close ups to emphasis on certain importance to the film. Towards the end of the trailer the sequence speeds up, and then stops to introduce the name of the film. And then there is a small sequence filmed at the end, with a sudden loud non-diagetic sound to make the audience jump, and want to know what happens next.

I find that this trailer is effective. Straight away there is a diagetic calm sounds of cricket bugs, and then there is a loud shocking sound, following this sudden sound is yet still the continuance of crickets and then the car engine, showing the scene of a car driving through a forest. When the shots change there is a big flash showing frustration and creating tension to the audience. There are close ups of the man using two different tools to get into a house rather than just a key, this informs the audience that something is wrong with what the character is doing. There is mainly darkness throughout, and fast pace non-diagetic sounds. There is information of other films that were created by the same people, which if the audience had seen those films and enjoyed them they may be interested in watching this film that the trailer is of. Not being able to identify what the characters fear creates anxiety, and brings thoughts of the worse to the audience. Then there is information of the film name, then as the thing that they fear closes the lid on what I can connote as being a box, the date of the when the film comes out appears automatically after this event. I think that this film is effective, because it doesn’t tell you the whole storyline of the film, but gives you hints of what happens, and then there is diagetic and non diagetic sounds that create tension and questions in the audiences minds. They also have basic information that the audience would like or need to know for example when the film comes out and what the name of the film is.

This film trailer also appears to be very effective in my opinion. The trailer starts off with a nice calm non-diagetic music, the scene starts off on a baseball field, with the crowd cheering. There is then a more piecing tense non-diagetic sound comes in, as two security men notice a man with a gun coming on to the pitch. Later on in the trailer quick pace shots are used to show a series of events without telling the whole story to the audience but they see things that may interest them to know what goes on throughout the film. Close ups shots bring the audience into the story, making them more involved and wanting to know more about what happens, and more interested in watching the film. The men begin to panic and the pace of shots becoming quicker and the non-diagetic music getting louder shows this. There is another set of non-diagetic music replacing the former music being used, this is calm, but the lyrics reflect the storyline, creating sadness and emotion to the audience. They then inform the audience of the film name. I think that it is effective the way that the use of non-diagetic music is used to create different feelings for the audience. An exact storyline has not been established within this trailer, this leaves the audience asking questions about what happens and how have these things happened, which entices them to watch the film.

I think that this trailer is very affective, the way they use a loud shocking sound that lasts for less than a second, and then there are flashes of lightening which a lot of people find fighting would already create an atmosphere for the audience. Fade transformations and slow deep music used to create tension. Two quick cuts of violent scenes may create shock to the audience. Conventional things used within a film of vampires, the shots have thunder and lightening, showing the vampires in light and dark, when its dark you can see there eyes glowing, something that is surreal as this would create questions to the audience. The vampires are wearing the same sort of things as human beings do such as suits, they also do similar things to us such as smoke, and this would make the audience think well they aren’t much different from us what is the threat, but the storyline within the trailer goes on to inform the audience of the fear behind these mysterious creatures. A shot showing hundreds of people caged up not moving or showing any signs of life to them, may create sadness to the audience, knowing that they are other human beings, not being in control of there own lives. Relief comes to the audience as a woman with a crossbow weapon threatens a vampire to bring back the human race. As times become desperate a calm music comes in to the scenes, and more shots and variety of shots are shown but in slow motion, this helps to show tragedy and bring sad emotions to the audience. Near the end there is information on the name of the film and who stars in the film.

Teaser Trailer

Teaser Trailers

A short trailer that is used to help advertise an upcoming movie is known as a Teaser Trailer.

Teaser Trailers are usually only about for a short period of time, between 30-60 seconds.
They usually contain little actual footage from the film itself. Sometimes, it is merely a shortened version of a theatrical trailer.
Teaser Trailers are commonly released long in advance of the film they are advertising.
The reasons for the name “teaser trailer” is because they are shown roughly 1 – 1 ½ years before the film is due to come out on cinema screens, so it is used to “tease” the audience.
